Lemon N Sugar

Lemon N Sugar was an impressive winner of the Class 3 fillies’ six-furlong handicap at Goodwood last Friday evening. A well-backed second favourite behind the Clive Cox-trained Perfect Silence, she was steadied by Tom Queally at the start and travelled well just about a length off the pace on the near side of the field as they pretty much raced down the centre of the track. Travelling best of all at the two-furlong pole, her response when Queally asked her to go on was impressive. She picked up nicely, strode out well, took it up just outside the furlong pole and kept on powerfully to win, going away, by two lengths.

The daughter of Lemon Drop Kid has now won three of her four races this term – her first three runs were on an artificial surface – but this was her best performance by some way, and she can continue to progress from here. This was her first run on turf since last October, and she proved that she is as effective, if not more effective, on it as she is on Fibresand or Polytrack. She is entered in the Stewards’ Cup over the same course and distance as Friday’s race and, even if she doesn’t get into that, she should get into the consolation race, and she would be an interesting one in either. Her new mark of 82 is 7lb higher than the mark off which she won on Friday, but her rate of progress should be even greater than that now.
