Poet’s Voice

The Godolphin newcomer Poet’s Voice put in a nice performance in the seven-furlong maiden at Newmarket on Wednesday, a maiden that is usually worth keeping a close eye on for future pointers. Settled nicely in mid-division in the early stages, the son of Dubawi made nice progress towards the far side from the three-furlong pole, and emerged as a real danger to leader Timely Jazz, who had had the benefit of a run, as they passed the two-furlong pole. However, he just couldn’t sustain his effort, but there was no disgrace in finishing third, just three lengths behind the winner Elusive Pimpernel, who could be very good. This is a race that Godolphin like to win, or at least in which they like to start off some of their more promising juveniles. Rio De La Plata beat Fifteen Love in the race in 2007, Belenus won it on his racecourse debut in 2004, and Dubai Destination won it in 2001 for Godolphin. Poet’s Voice is obviously well regarded, and he is interesting for the future.
