Start Right

Start Right was a really impressive winner of a one-mile handicap at Goodwood on Tuesday. He was slowly away, as he can be, and he was left well back in the field, which probably wasn’t the plan. He was still buried behind a wall of horses at the three-furlong marker, but he was going well enough to manufacture his own gaps and once he got in the clear, he pulled right away from his field inside the final furlong.

This looked a hot handicap and it was run at a solid pace – the time was only marginally slower than the time that Lord Shanakill clocked in winning the Group 2 Betfair Cup over the same course and distance earlier on the card – and Start Right was a clear-cut winner. Luca Cumani’s gelding was probably better-off for coming from off the pace, but he still had to wait for his gaps and, when they appeared, he was good enough to go through them and it looked like he finished the race with plenty of energy left. He seems to really have hit his stride now, a fast-run race over a mile or nine furlongs suits him well, and although the handicapper has put him up 8lb for this, there should be more to come.

The son of Footstepsinthesand is still progressing, he has yet to run a bad race and he could land a big handicap over his distance before the end of the season. He wouldn’t have to improve a great deal to be up to Pattern class.
