Pete The Feat

Pete The Feat completed his fifth win on the bounce when winning the Mandarin Handicap Chase at Newbury last Saturday, and there is no sign of his winning run coming to an end.

He raced keenly in front, keener than ideal in the conditions, but he still travelled well into the home straight and he kicked clear of his only serious rival Relax early in the home straight. He did get start to idle late on, he was probably getting a little tired as well, which allowed Relax to close up the run-in having looked very weary over the second last fence, but Pete The Feat had been out in front for a long way and it is likely that he still had a fair bit left to give.

The King’s Theatre gelding only joined Charlie Longsdon in the summer and this was his fifth win from his fifth start for his new yard. He may only have been winning smallish races up to now, but he has been winning them impressively, and those races are generally working out well. He started his winning run on a mark of 94, and he was winning here off a mark of 125, but there was so much to like about him here that it is reasonable to assume that he can go even higher. A 9lb rise for this brings him up to a mark of 134, but he could be even better than that mark. He should do better when he drops the bridle earlier, he does just seem to race a little too keenly, and it may be the case that he will be even better in a more strongly-run race, which he should get when he steps up in class now.
