Rehn’s Nest

Rehn’s Nest ran a cracker to finish second from her wide draw in the Irish 1000 Guineas on Sunday. The winner was drawn in stall two, the third horse got across into a good position one off the far rail after a couple of furlongs, and they didn’t go a mad gallop, which accentuated the disadvantage of a wide draw and probably made it an advantage to race close to the pace.

Rehn’s Nest travelled strongly in rear, she was going at least as well as anything else two and a half furlongs from home, but she repeatedly met traffic in the home straight. Second last of the 15 runners passing the two-furlong pole, she stayed on best of all to snatch second place on the line, having had to squeeze through a narrow gap towards the outside at the furlong pole.

The Jim Bolger-trained filly was rejected by Kevin Manning here in favour of Bunairgead and, winner of the Group 3 Park Express Stakes on her reappearance, she could do even better than this. That Park Express Stakes win was on heavy ground, as was her best run by far as a juvenile, when she finished second in a listed race at The Curragh last October. Although she travelled strongly on this quick ground, she should be even better back with some ease in the ground.

Also, by Authorized out of a Galileo mare, she raced here as if she would appreciate a step up in trip. She did race over 10 furlongs in the Group 3 Blue Wind Stakes at Naas on her previous run, but that race wasn’t run to suit her, and you can easily forgive her that. She could be under-rated when she steps up in trip again now. She could even be a Ribblesdale Stakes filly.
