I am backing Spark Plug here. It is a little frustrating that he was a bigger price last night, but I still think that he is worth backing.

Brian Meehan’s horse shaped like a talented performer last season as a three-year-old, his first season to race. He won his first two, and he finished close up behind Cannock Chase and Postponed and Cloudscape in the Group 3 Tercentenary Stakes at Royal Ascot on his third.

He was a little disappointing on his two runs after that but, he proved that those runs were all wrong (one was on soft ground) when he ran a cracker on his debut this season to finish second to Ayaar in the Spring Cup over this course and distance.

He was held up out the back that day, and he had to come through traffic to get out after the leader. More than that, however, the race was run to suit the prominent racers, five of the first six home were better than mid-division from early. Spark Plug was the only horse to get into it from the rear.

The handicapper raised him 2lb for that run, and that was decidedly lenient. (He raised the winner 6lb.) That was Spark Plug’s seasonal debut and just his sixth ever race, so he should progress for it. He obviously goes well over this course and distance, and he should go close.

SPARK PLUG WON (SP 9/2)
