Backspin

It is difficult to gauge the strength of the opposition in the bumper at Punchestown on Saturday for horses who have never raced under rules before, but Backspin travelled like the winner from a long way out, cruised through to take it up with ease a furlong and a half out, and quickened away impressively when JT McNamara asked him to pick up.

The Flemensfirth gelding could be a useful recruit for Mag Mullins. This race was has been won by some useful horses in the past, including On Raglan Road and Cloone Rocket, while Dunguib was second to On Raglan Road in the race in 2008 and Old Charm was third in it last year. Presumably Backspin will go jumping hurdles now. He has a jumper’s pedigree, from the family of Joss Naylor and Native Mission. He is interesting.
