Yaa Wayl

Yaa Wayl put in a really good performance, given the conditions, to finish second to Shakespearean in a seven-furlong listed race at Epsom last Friday. Michael Jarvis’s gelding raced freely through the early stages and pulled hard under Philip Robinson. He never looked at ease throughout but as they came up the straight, he made good progress at the two-furlong marker to challenge for second. The winner looked very smart on the day and was not for catching after enjoying an easy enough lead from the start, but Yaa Wayl stayed on well into second and it was a really pleasing effort.

There was a lot to like about this performance. Coming into the race he had plenty to find at the weights, he did not seem to handle the track and having pulled hard early on, he still had enough energy left to run on at the end to finish second. The winner should be well able to hold his own Pattern. There was some very decent form in behind as well, those who finished close up were all rated 100+ and were racing off level weights with Yaa Wayl, who was rated 94. Judged on this, the son of Whipper is clearly still improving and he should be able to progress through the season.

The handicapper has put him up 8lb for this, to a mark of 102, which gives him a tough enough mark if connections opted for a handicap on his next start. But he should get better and will be much better suited to a more conventional track next time. He has had two runs now so far this season and he should be able to settle better next time.
