Charlie Cool

Charlie Cool was unlucky to catch a bit of a tartar in Kiwi Bay in a Class 3 one-mile handicap at Redcar on Tuesday. The Ruth Carr-trained individual did everything right, he settled well for useful apprentice James Sullivan, he moved up between horses nicely, he got a nice gap two furlongs out and he picked up well to go through it. The only problem was that Kiwi Bay was travelling equally well and moving up equally smoothly on the far side. The two of them engaged in a real set-to inside the final furlong, with Michael Dods’s horse coming out on top by a neck.

Kiwi Bay was mentioned here before as one to follow after he finished fourth in a Pontefract handicap on his penultimate run, and he remains worth following, but so is Charlie Cool. The son of Rainbow Quest is seven years old now, he has raced 38 times, but he has hit a rich vein of form, he would have been completing a hat-trick here had it not been for the presence of Kiwi Bay or had the neck verdict gone the other way. He was racing off a mark of 88 here, but he was rated 107 at his peak and he has won off a mark of 104. He will get a couple of pounds for this, but he should still be worth following.
