Wentworth Falls

Wentworth Falls did well to keep on as well as he did to finish third in the Portland Handicap over an extended 5f, given that he raced in rear in a race in which it was probably an advantage to race up with the pace. Taken back early on by Sam James in order to get him settled, he was almost last on the far side as they passed the 3f marker, fully 8l behind the leader A Momentofmadness. He still travelled well to the 2f marker, and he did manage to chart a relatively un-checked path through traffic, but the race was not run at a frenetic pace, and he just started his run from too far back given the manner in which the race was run. He finished off his race best of all to take third place, just a length and a half behind A Momentofmadness, who made all. Five of the first six home raced prominently from early.

All Geoff Harker’s horse’s good form before this was over 6f, and he can improve again for stepping up to that trip. This was close to a career-best from him though, and he will be of interest wherever he goes next. He goes well on fast ground and, while he probably wouldn’t want the ground to get too soft, he does have good form on good ground.
