Maygold

Maygold was really impressive in winning the five-furlong handicap. Slowly away and held up early on, she travelled well through her race in rear. She picked up nicely when Liam Keniry asked her to, she hit the front at the furlong pole, and she cleared away impressively.

This was a really likeable performance by Ed Walker’s filly. The time was good, and the form was enhanced by runner-up Arecibo, who came out and finished fourth in the Portland Handicap next time. She is a progressive filly, and she is talented, particularly on soft ground. Her record on soft ground now reads 3211. The handicapper raised her by 7lb for this to a mark of 97, but that mark should be well within range on soft ground. She could be worth another shot now at a listed race, or even a Group 3, especially now on soft ground as we move into the autumn. She holds an entry in the Rous Stakes at Ascot on Saturday, and she will be of interest if she takes up that entry, especially if the ground comes up soft.
