Beckman
Noted here after he finished fourth in a hot Tetrarch Stakes at The Curragh two weeks ago, Beckman is worthy of note again after his victory in the one-mile handicap at Naas on Sunday. It looked for a little while as if he was going to be an unlucky loser, as he was short of room towards the far side at the two-furlong marker as the well-backed favourite Mississippi River kicked for home on the near side. Colin Keane had to bide his time, but he got the gap just inside the furlong marker and, when he did, Ger Lyons' horse really picked up smartly, hitting the front 125 yards out and going on to win cozily.
This was Beckman's first win since he won his maiden at The Curragh on his racecourse debut last June, but he shaped well in the Tetrarch Stakes on his debut this season, his first run since being gelded, and this was another step forward from that. He was winning here off a handicap rating of 96, so he deserves to go back into stakes company now. His trainer mentioned the Ballycorus Stakes as a possible next target for him now, and it is easy to see him going well in that before stepping up in grade again.
