Alakazi

Alakazi kept on nicely to take third place in the Tetrarch Stakes at The Curragh on Monday. Settled back in the field early on by Ben Coen, he was last of the eight runners passing the three-furlong marker. Asked for his effort on the run to the two-furlong marker, he chased Officer through as that rival picked up ahead of him and, while he couldn't get to Aidan O'Brien's horse, he kept on well all the way to the line to take third place behind him and Currawood, in front of Beckman, closest at the finish.

Johnny Murtagh's horse was really impressive in winning his maiden at Leopardstown on his debut this season, when he showed a sparkling turn of foot to quicken up off a sedate pace and win by seven and a half lengths. This was obviously a significant step up in grade, into the Tetrarch Stakes and taking on potentially high-class rivals, but he proved that he belonged in this grade. Out of a half-sister to Alashar, who won over nine and a half furlongs, he shaped here as if he would appreciate a step up in trip, but a fast-run stiff mile suits him well too. This was just his third race, and he will be of interest wherever he goes next.
