Beckman

The other horse to take out of the Tetrarch Stakes is Beckman. Weak in the market beforehand, he was smartly away and he adopted a prominent position on the outside, just behind the two leaders Wannabe Royal and Titanium Emperor, moving up into a share of the lead as they raced inside the three-furlong marker. He came under a ride on the run to the two-furlong pole, he couldn't go with Officer and Currawood as they went on, and he ceded third place close home to Alakazi, but they are three talented colts.

It was a fine run by Ger Lyons' horse on his seasonal return, and his first run since being gelded. A winner over six furlongs at The Curragh on his racecourse debut last summer, he kept good company after that, finishing fourth next time in the Group 3 Tyros Stakes behind subsequent Beresford Stakes winner and Futurity Trophy winner Hotazhell, and finishing second in the Listed Churchill Stakes at Tipperary in August behind January, who finished second behind Sunday's 1000 Guineas winner Desert Flower in both the May Hill Stakes and the Fillies' Mile. Beckman weakend through the closing stages of this race on his first attempt at a mile, but it may be that it was lack of a recent run that told in the end. He is bred for a mile and even further, and he saw out seven and a half furlongs well in the Churchill Stakes. Seven furlongs may prove to be his optimum trip, but he is worthy of another go over a mile.
