Sheradann
Sheradann stayed on well to finish third in the Northumberland Vase at Newcastle on Saturday. Smartly away and quickly into his racing rhythm, just a little better than mid-division, he had to be squeezed along a little by Hector Crouch at varying stages of the race. A little worse than mid-division as they raced around the home turn, he came under a ride at the top of the home straight, but he responded well. He made ground on the leaders on the far side from the three-furlong marker to the winning line, getting up to take third place in the end, just over a length behind the winner Savrola.
He did well to get as close as he did, coming from back in the field off a moderate pace in a race in which the first two home were prominent position from early. His finishing speed was over 110% of his overall speed, and he was fastest of all through the final furlong. Ian Williams' horse will be of interest again now when there is a premium on stamina. He has never been beyond an extended two miles in his life but, a three-time winner over distances up to a mile and seven furlongs on soft ground in France, he will be of interest if and when he goes up in trip now. He hasn't won in Britain yet, but he has gone close twice at Kempton, and he shaped here as if his turn shouldn't be too far off. He wasn't beaten far at a big price in the Summer Handicap at Glorious Goodwood last year over a mile and six furlongs when, once again, he shaped as if he would appreciate a greater test of stamina. He will be of interest if he goes back to Goodwood this year, especially if they get soft ground. He handles soft ground well, and he should appreciate the greater test of stamina that he will get if and when he does encounter soft ground later in the season.
