Night Raider
Night Raider ran well for a long way in the King George V Stakes at Goodwood on Friday. Smartly away from stall 11, he led the group of four that raced towards the near side from early. In front overall until the run to the furlong marker, at which point he was passed by just Frost At Dawn who raced on the far side, his run flattened out inside the final furlong. He finished only sixth overall, but he was beaten a total of two lengths, and he came almost three lengths clear of the next best horse on the near side.
Karl Burke's horse hasn't won yet this season, but, winner of his last two races last season, rounding off his year by winning a listed race over six furlongs at Newcastle in November, he has been highly tried. His four runs this season to date have all been in Group 1 or Group 2 races. This was his best run since he led to the furlong pole in the Duke of York Stakes on his debut this season. A winner over seven furlongs as a juvenile and as a three-year-old, he shaped that day as if he would benefit from a drop back down to five. He proved that day too that he can operate at York and, as such, he will be an interesting outsider in the Nunthorpe Stakes if he takes up his entry there at York's Ebor meeting.
