Beylerbeyi
Beylerbeyi did well to finish second in the Mallard Handicap at Doncaster on Friday. Held up through the early stages of the race, 12th of the 13 runners from early, he only moved out of second last position on the run to the two-furlong marker. Moved towards the outside by Clifford Lee at that point, he stayed on strongly from there and managed to pass all his rivals except Subsequent, who had just a half a length on him by the time he got to the winning line.
This was Ian Williams’ horse’s first attempt at a distance in excess of a mile and a half on the flat, and he saw out the trip well. More than that, he was held up off a moderate pace, his finishing speed was over 108% of overall speed, and he did best by far of the hold-up horses. The other five horses who, with him, filled the first six places, were all prominent from early, and they occupied five of the first six places passing the three-furlong pole. Beylerbeyi was 12th at that point.
He is not obviously unexposed, but he is better than ever this year, he racked up a hat-trick over a mile and a half during the summer, rising from a mark of 76 to the mark of 91 off which he raced on Friday. He got another 3lb for Friday’s run, but he remains unexposed enough over staying trips now to make him of interest off his new mark of 94. He holds an entry in the Autumn Cup at Newbury on Saturday, and he will be of interest if he lines up in that.
