Louis Veron

Louis Veron did really well to get as close as he did in the opening novices' hurdle at Chepstow on Friday. Held up through the early stages of the race by Harry Skelton off a sedate pace, he was still no better than ninth jumping the first flight in the home straight. He made nice ground though from the third last flight, moved in behind the leaders on the run to the last, and he picked up nicely though when his rider asked him to. He hit the front over the last, and he looked the likely winner before he was run down close home by Frontier Prince, going down by just a neck, with the unlucky-looking Matty's Getaway back in third.

It was still a really promising performance by Dan Skelton's horse on his racecourse debut. He did well to get as close as he got from back in the field off a sedate pace, as evidenced by the winner's finishing speed of 112% of overall speed, and he was fastest of all through the final four furlongs. Matty's Getaway was unlucky, he was badly hampered at the third last flight, but it may be that the quality of Louis Veron's run remains under the radar. He was weak in the market here, he obviously surprised a few people, but he should be winning his maiden soon before stepping up in grade.
