The Lord Maid
Impose Toi ran out a seriously impressive winner of the Pertemps qualifier at Aintree on Saturday, he could be a Stayers' Hurdle candidate now, but the performance that The Lord Maid put up in finishing third behind him may have gone a little under the radar. In front from flagfall, it wasn't ideal that five of the eight hurdles were omitted. Nor was it ideal for Tom Lacey's mare that she made a really bad mistake at the second flight down the back straight final time, from which she did well to recover. Still in front when they turned for home and faced up to the long home straight, weaving in and out among the hurdles, she stuck to her task well for Stan Sheppard, she was only headed inside the final furlong and she rallied after she was passed, just ceding the runner-up spot by a neck to Chasing Fire.
Winner of her maiden hurdle at Clonmel on heavy ground for Josh Halley, she has raced just seven times now over hurdles, and she remains unexposed over staying trips. Her three best runs have been her last three, her three runs over two miles and seven and a half furlongs or further. She handles soft and heavy ground as well as this good to soft ground. She can be marked up at least a little on the bare form of this run, and she has the potential to go beyond the handicap rating of 132 off which she raced here.
