Even Tho
Even Tho was impressive in winning the bumper that concluded proceedings at Limerick last Tuesday. Prominent from early, she moved easily into second place under Patrick Mullins behind the leader Araminta as they rounded the home turn, she came under a ride early in the home straight, at which point she had about two lengths to find with the leader, who appeared to be travelling at least as well as she was, maybe even a little bit better. But she picked up well, she joined the leader just inside the furlong marker and she kept on well to win nicely, coming clear of Araminta, who was in turn well clear of the rest.
Time may prove that this was a smart performance from Willie Mullins' mare. The runner-up had finished second behind a well-regarded mare of Sam Curling's, Ealu, in a bumper at Leopardstown's early-March meeting, a race from which the third-placed mare Shirzan came out and won the maiden hurdle earlier on the Limerick card, and she finished nicely clear of the rest of the field here. This was Even Tho's first run under Rules. A half-sister to Irish Grand National third The Enabler from the family of Denman, she looked set for victory in her only point-to-point for Pat Doyle when she came down at the final fence, and it will be interesting to monitor her progress now. She shaped here like she could easily go out in trip, and that hypothesis is backed up by her pedigree.
