Majolique
Majolique ran a big race to finish third in the Grade 2 juveniles' hurdle at Fairyhouse on Monday. Keen early on, so settled at the back of the field by Paul Townend, it wasn't ideal for her that the early pace was not strong. Last of the nine runners jumping the third last flight, she closed up as they raced to the home turn. Still eighth though of the eight remaining runners as they straightened up for home, she moved up nicely in among horses but, taken towards the outside, it wasn't ideal that she got in tight to the second last flight just as the pace was increasing. She picked up well from there, she flew the final flight, but she just couldn't get to the two leaders. She stuck to her task well, she was fastest of all through the final four furlongs, and she got to within just over two lengths of the winner, her stable companion Proactif, by the time they got to the winning line.
This was another really nice performance by Willie Mullins' filly. Winner of her only race on the flat in France over 10 furlongs, she was good in winning a listed juvenile hurdle at Naas in February on her first run for Willie Mullins and Kenny Alexander. The sentiment before that was that she would come on for the run, a sentiment that was reflected in her weakness in the market, but she won well, she showed a lot of pace, and that was after she had made a mistake at the second last flight. She improved on that here and, a four-year-old who has raced just twice now over hurdles, she should be able to continue her progress.
