Cromac Quay
Cromac Quay did well on her racecourse debut to finish third in the one-mile three-year-old fillies' maiden that opened proceedings at Leopardstown on Sunday. Settled just better than midfield by Scott McCullagh early on from her outside draw, she came under a squeeze as they raced across the top of the track with three furlongs to run, but she responded well. There was a lot to like about the manner in which she stuck to her task late on, going through a narrow enough gap inside the final furlong to get up for third place behind Skydance and Thundering On, who both had experience of racing as two-year-olds.
This was a nice performance by Jessica Harrington's filly, coming from back in the field off a moderate pace. The winner's finishing speed was over 108% of overall speed, the first two home were prominent from early, Cromac Quay was fastest of all through the final furlong, and the five other fillies who, with her, filled the first six places were all in front of her passing the two-furlong marker. The Stonethorns Stud Farm's filly was also widest drawn of the first five home. She should benefit from this experience and, out of Trethias, who won the Listed Naas Oaks Trial over 10 furlongs, and whose grandam is a half-sister to Prince of Wales's Stakes winner Rewilding and Yorkshire Oaks and Pretty Polly Stakes and Sheema Classic winner Dar Re Mi, she should do even better when she steps up in trip.
