Celandine

Celandine did well to get as close as she got in the listed six-furlong fillies' race that opened proceedings at Newmarket on Saturday. She totally missed the break, she was a clear last after they had gone 200 yards. Moved towards the near side by Kieran Shoemark, she moved up nicely and she picked up well on the run into the Dip. She looked a threat on the run to the furlong marker and, while she couldn’t mount a serious challenge, as the energy that she had to expend in order to move into a challenging position probably took its toll, she stuck to her task to finish fifth, three and a half lengths behind the winner Flora Of Bermuda.

This was a nice start to the 2026 season by Ed Walker's filly. Winner of the Lowther Stakes at York as a juvenile, she ran well back there on her debut last season too when she finished third in a Group 3 race behind Sayidah Dariyan. She should be able to build on this now and, given that three of her best four runs were at York, she will be of particular interest when she goes back to the Knavesmire.
