Binhareer

Binhareer is not under the radar or anything, he was an obvious eye-catcher from the 0-105 six-furlong handicap on the first day of York's Dante meeting, but he is still worthy of note. There are reasons for believing that he may still be under-estimated going forward.

He did remarkably well to get as close as he got. He was drawn in stall nine, towards the far side on a day on which the far side did well on the straight track, but he didn't race with the far-side runners, he raced more up the centre. As well as that, he was held up in a race in which the pace held up well. Only eighth passing the two-furlong marker, he finished off his race best of all to get to within a neck of the winner Dark Thirty, runner-up in the race last year. He had to do a lot of his own running too on the near side, he had to bridge the gap to the far-side group. Five of the first six home were drawn six or lower, and four of the first five home were in one of the first five places passing the two-furlong marker.

This was probably a career-best performance by William Haggas' horse. Sixth in Ayr Silver Cup last September, he rounded off last season with an impressive victory in the Coral Spring Trophy at York in October off a mark of 89. He was raised by 10lb for that, but he proved at York that he was well able for his new mark of 99, and he is progressive enough to be able to cope with the 5lb hike that he got for his run last Wednesday. He has reached a new level since he dropped down to six furlongs from seven. He obviously goes well at York, but he also goes well at Ascot, as he proved when he finished third in a six-furlong handicap there in September. Also, his hold-up style or racing is more suited to Ascot than it is to York, so he will be of interest if he goes to the Royal meeting. He would be a big player in the Wokingham, but it is significant that connections thought enough of him to give him an entry in the Jubilee Stakes, and he would be an interesting outsider if he lined up in that.
