Silver Ghost

Silver Ghost was probably unlucky not to win the seven-furlong handicap at Newmarket on Saturday. Held up early on behind a moderate pace, and still last of the 11 runners passing the two-furlong marker, she had to switch to the far side in order to deliver her effort, furthest from the stands rail. She picked up well when Finley Marsh asked her for her effort, and she went to the line strongly, failing by just a neck to catch Superposition, who was prominent from early and who was delivered with his run close to the stands rail before drifting towards the centre. Silver Ghost was fastest of all through each of the last three furlongs.

This was a nice step forward by Emma Lavelle's filly on her seasonal return, turning the form around, as she did, with Golden Redemption, who finished over three lengths behind her here. She goes well at Newmarket, but she also goes well at Goodwood, so she will be of interest if and when she goes back there, and she will be interesting if and when she goes back to Ascot, where her hold-up style of racing should be an asset, as opposed to at Newmarket, where it is not. Seven furlongs is her track, a fast pace and seven furlongs, to the Buckingham Palace is the race for her at Royal Ascot if that meeting is her target.
