Iron Fist
Iron Fist did well to get as close as he got to Perry Mason in the 10-furlong handicap at The Curragh on Irish Guineas weekend. Settled back in the field early on by Shane Foley from his outside draw, he was taken to the outside in the home straight, and he finished off his race strongly to take third place behind Perry Mason and Perfect You Craft, closest at the finish.
This was a race in which the pace held up well, a consistent theme at The Curragh on Irish Guineas weekend, as it often is at The Curragh. The pace not fast, as evidenced by a finishing speed of over 112% of overall speed, which is significantly higher than RaceiQ's par of just over 105%. The first two home were first and second from flagfall, and the other four horses who, with Iron Fist, filled the first five places were all in the first five passing the four-furlong marker. Iron Fist was 12th at that point. He was fastest of all through the final three furlongs.
A dual winner last year as a three-year-old over a mile, Jessica Harrington's horse was only just beaten over 10 furlongs on his previous run at Cork in April off a mark of 90, and he stepped forward from that again here off a 2lb higher mark. He was raised by another 3lb for this run, but a mark of 95 should still be well within range. He handles soft ground too, and he should be seen to better effect in a more strongly-run race.
