Saddadd
Saddadd could only finish third in the Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup at The Curragh last weekend, but there was a lot to like about the performance that he put up. Settled back in the field early on by Ray Dawson, last of the seven runners, he was still seventh passing the three-furlong marker, and he did well to stay on as well as he did on the outside, widest of all, to take third place behind Almaqam and Saturday's Coronation Cup winner Bay City Roller, who were both ridden more prominently, the first three clear. He was fastest of all through the final furlong.
Winner of the London Gold Cup last season as a three-year-old, a race that his trainer Roger Varian won in the past with subsequent Coronation Cup and Hardwicke Stakes winner Defoe, the Pinatubo colt was good in winning the Group 3 Gordon Richards Stakes at Sandown on his return this season. That took his record at Sandown to two from two. He has raced just eight times in his life, he will be of interest wherever he goes next, and he could be a lively outsider for the Eclipse, run, as it is, over the Gordon Richards course and distance.
