Lake Forest

Lake Forest finished off his race well to take fifth place in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes on Saturday. Dropped in early on by Cieren Fallon, last of the 18 runners, he travelled well to the two-furlong marker, and he made his way through traffic from there. He never had his momentum checked really, but he still had to manoeuvre his way through a little bit, and he finished off his race well to get to within just over a length of the four horses who shared the photo finish for first place.

It was a game effort by William Haggas' horse, but this six-furlong trip on fast ground is probably just a sharper test than ideal. Second in the Commonwealth Cup over this course and distance as a three-year-old, he ran in the Queen Anne over a mile at the Royal meeting last year, but seven furlongs is probably his optimum trip. He finished second in the Group 2 Lennox Stakes over that trip at Goodwood last year, and he finished second again behind Summer Mile winner Never So Brave in the Group 1 City of York Stakes at the Ebor meeting last August. Gelded during the winter, he looked better than ever when he won the Listed Spring Trophy over seven furlongs at Haydock on his seasonal return. He is five now, but he could be an improved horse for the gelding operation, and he will be of interest wherever he goes now. He should be a big player again in the City of York Stakes, if he goes for that race again, and the Prix de la Foret at Longchamp on Arc day in October is an obvious longer range target.
