Sea Scout
Sea Scout ran a big race on his return to finish second behind the talented Sallaal in the Group 3 Rose Of Lancaster Stakes at Haydock on Saturday. There were just four runners in the race, and James Doyle was able to set sedate early fractions on Sea Scout. That said, he was challenged early in the home straight, first by Convergent and then by Sallaal, and there was a lot to like about the manner in which he stuck to his task. It took Sallaal a little while to master him, and he stuck to his task well enough to retain second place ahead of another talented rival in Nahraan, who was delivered late.
It was a fine return to action from the Crisfords' horse, his first run since he finished third in the Group 3 St Simon Stakes at Newbury last October. Gelded in the off-season, his best runs last season were over a mile and a half and on soft or easy ground, so he will be of interest again now when he steps back up to a mile and a half and when the ground eases again. Thought good enough to be allowed take his chance in the Derby last season, his grandam is a half-sister to Oaks winner Love Divine, and there could be a fair bit more to come from him as we move into the autumn.
