Prince Of India
Prince Of India was the class horse in the listed six-furlong contest at Newmarket on Saturday, and he made all to win well. He did well to finish second behind Coppull in the Group 2 Hungerford Stakes at Newbury the previous Saturday too. Weak in the market before that race, he was keener than ideal through the early stages of the race, but he moved nicely into his race just behind Witness Box on the run to the two-furlong marker. He still travelled well when the winner moved to his left and made a break for home, and he picked up impressively when Pat Dobbs asked him to. The winner wasn't stopping, he stuck to his task well on this step up to seven furlongs, but Prince Of India closed on him on the run to the line, getting to within a length when they got there.
It was a really good run by Marco Botti's horse, stepping back up to seven furlongs. Nine of his previous 10 races has been over six, but he is a dual winner over seven, and he shaped in the July Cup on his previous run as if he could improve again for a step back up in trip. That run in the July Cup can be marked up too, he came from the rear and he was a little short of room inside the final furlong. The first five finished clear, he was just a length behind Coppull, and he would have been closer had he had a clearer run late on. The form of the July Cup is working out well already. As well as Coppull's win in the Hungerford Stakes, the third-placed horse Division was just beaten a short neck by Samangan in the Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest last week. Prince Of India will be of interest now wherever he goes. He holds an entry in the Group 2 Park Stakes at Doncaster on St Leger day, and that looks like an ideal target for him now. Seven furlongs could be his optimum trip.
