Lord Aus

Lord Aus finished off his race well to take second place behind Count Bezukhov in the one-mile-six-furlong three-year-olds’ handicap at Listowel last Tuesday. Back in the field early on, he was still only seventh with three furlongs to run, but he finished off his race well for Ben Coen. He failed by just a neck to catch the winner, and he was past him two strides past the winning line.

This was Johnny Murtagh's horse's eighth run, he is not as obviously unexposed as some of his contemporaries, but this was a career-best performance, racing over the longest trip over which he has raced to date. And he can be marked up on the bare form of the run, coming from back in the field off a sedate pace, as evidenced by the winner's finishing speed of over 113% of overall speed. He was fastest of all through the final furlong and through the final three furlongs.

A 2lb hike for this run was not harsh. It takes him up to a mark of 75, and he retains the potential to go beyond that rating. He handled the yielding ground here well and, a half-brother to Cesarewitch winner Alphonse Le Grande, there is every chance that he can improve again for a greater stamina test.
