Natural High
The Dermot Weld-trained Natural High looked a bit unlucky in the 14-furlong qualified riders' race at Galway on Monday. Settled just behind the leaders early on by Robbie McNamara, the relatively sedate early pace was not in his favour. He had to come wide around the home turn and pick up into a quickening pace, which wasn't ideal, but he still finished with a flourish to take third place, just a neck behind Torphichen in second and just a half a length behind the winner Lucky At Last.
This was just the third run of the Moyglare Stud gelding's life. He was impressive in winning his bumper at the Galway Festival and he was impressive again in winning a maiden over a mile and a half at Tipperary in September. He is apparently set to go hurdling now, which is interesting. There is the issue about the probability of him being over-bet next time, as apparently unlucky losers generally are. Nevertheless, a son of Sadler's Wells out of an Indian Ridge mare who won a listed race over seven furlongs, he could be a very exciting recruit to the winter game.
