Peddlers Cross

Peddlers Cross put up a good performance to win the bumper at Haydock on Saturday. Always travelling well for Jason Maguire, the son of Oscar made eye-catching progress on the outside from the top of the home straight, cruised in behind the favourite Sure Josie Sure, who went for home three furlongs out, moved easily to the front on the inside a furlong and a half out, and picked up impressively to draw away and win impressively.

This looked like a decent bumper beforehand, a bumper that Albertas Run won four years ago, insofar as there are decent bumpers in the UK, and the right horses filled the placings. The runner-up, Bescot Springs, a half-brother to Pause And Clause, was a newcomer from the Philip Hobbs yard, which won this race last year with Dare Me. Third home was the filly Sure Josie Sure, who won a mares' race over the course and distance three weeks previously, and was well backed, and the front three finished well clear of the remained. Peddlers Cross, for his own part, was an impressive-looking winner of a two-and-a-half-mile point-to-point at Liscarroll last March on his only previous appearance in public, after which he was purchased by Donald McCain for £100,000 at the Brightwells sale at Cheltenham in April. From the family of a 1000 Guineas third, he is certainly not lacking for pace, he should progress from this and he could be an exciting recruit.
