High Constable
High Constable put in a good performance to finish second to Meezaan in the seven furlong handicap at Newbury on Friday. Roger Charlton’s colt broke well on the stand-side and raced fairly keenly for Steve Drowne in the early stages. Prominent throughout, Drowne moved High Constable out for a run at the three-furlong pole, he went for him two furlongs out and the horse picked really well. He moved into second under pressure but could not get near Meezaan who just out-speeded him, having shown a sharp turn of foot two out. Nonetheless this was a fine run form the Queen’s horse, he was doing his best work in the final furlong and looks to be crying out for further.
This was High Constable’s first run since he won on the Polytrack at Wolverhampton in January over nine furlongs, and he shaped nicely here over a shorter trip that may not have been ideal. This race has always been a decent contest down the years, and the form of this year's renewal looks solid at this early stage. The winner Meezaan just had too much pace for them and looks well capable of stepping up to Group level, while those in behind High Constable, Gramercy and Rjeef look like progressive sorts. High Constable himself looks like an extremely progressive horse and he will be seen to even better effect when he is upped in trip again. His win on the all-weather was a comfortable success over nine furlongs, in a race that has worked out exceptionally well. The second that day, Greyfriarschorista, was a wide margin winner of his next three starts and then went very close in a listed event at Lingfield. The third in that race, who was eight lengths back, has also come out and won.
The Roger Charlton-trained colt is a half-brother to Group 1 winner Right Approach, and he looks well capable of competing at Group 3 level at least. He showed he can handle good ground, as well as Polytrack, and he will be of significant interest on his next run when he goes over further.
