Marywell
Marywell put up a good performance in finishing second to the odds-on favourite Nouriya in a 10-furlong maiden at Newbury last Thursday. John Gosden’s filly was held up towards the rear by William Buick, just towards the outside of the field. She made good progress and picked up well coming up the straight to challenge Nouriya, but she could never get to the favourite, who looked good, and the pair of them finished eight lengths clear of the useful Issabella Gem.
This was a really good effort form Marywell on only her second ever start. She had to make ground from the back to get into a challenging position whereas Nouriya had the run of the race, just up on the outside of the leaders. While it never looked like she would get to Nouriya, she got within three lengths and Michael Stoute’s filly is potentially high class. Marywell looked really promising on her debut as well when finishing fourth in what looked like an above average fillies' maiden at Warwick. She ran a lot better than her finishing position suggests as she was held up at the back off a slow pace, got forced wide as the pace quickened off the home turn and then stayed on nicely under hands and heels into fourth. It took her a little while to get the hang of things that day and she was not given a hard time when her chance had gone. The daughter of Selkirk has put up two really good performances now and she should be able to win a maiden soon before stepping up in grade. She is a half-sister to Set The Scene, a winner over a mile and a half so, even though she is by Selkirk, there is every chance that she will get further in time and, with natural progression to come, she is worth following.
