Beachfire

Beachfire looked an unlikely winner through the early stages of the nine-furlong handicap at Sandown last Saturday, but ended up winning readily and he now looks interesting. John Gosden’s colt slowly away and William Buick was already giving him reminders after a couple of hundred yards. He travelled well in behind after that, however, picked up nicely early in the home straight and came through the field as they edged towards the near side to win well, going away in the end.

You would have to worry about the attitude that Beachfire showed here, he raced with his head held high and was reluctant in the early part of the race, but after that he travelled really well and he ran all the way to the line to win with a little bit in hand. His reluctance may be down to inexperience, and Buick reported after the race that the horse was not necessarily ungenuine but had his own way of doing things. He should improve again from this outing, this was only his third run and it may be that he will need a little bit more experience before he will be seen at his best. On his first start he looked green throughout but produced a strong run to collar the favourite Suited And Booted late on, and that horse has subsequently won twice. Beachfire is a risky project, but he is obviously talented, he is a half-brother to the high class Major Cadeaux and, if he goes the right way, he could be very good.
