King Of Reason

King Of Reason put up a big performance in the Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot on Thursday. Drawn in stall one, he raced at the back of the near side group and he was last passing the three-furlong pole. At that stage the leaders in the near side group were about five lengths behind the leaders of the far side group which effectively meant King Of Reason was about 12 lengths behind the overall leaders, but he improved nicely and made good headway inside the last two furlongs to finish third in his near side group and fifth of overall.

It was a good effort from David Simcock’s horse in a typically ultra-competitive Britannia Stakes field. He probably would have finished closer had he been ridden closer to the pace - seven out of the top nine in the race were ridden prominently – as he had to come from a long way back to make up his ground, and he ran all the way to the line, giving the impression that a step up in trip would not be an inconvenience. He is still a maiden, but he has yet to run a bad race, and his three efforts so far this year have been promising. He travelled well behind Secretive last time before hanging a bit under pressure and that runner finished a good fourth here, when ridden prominently. The son of King's Best looks worth following, he is still progressing, the handicapper has left him on his mark of 83, which is more than fair, and he should also improve for a step up in trip.
