Serious Attitude

Serious Attitude produced a good effort to finish 10th, but just four lengths in the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot on Friday. Rae Guest’s filly raced in the far side group, she was a bit steady at the start, with the result that it left her in the rear of that group, and she was still last two on that side two furlongs out. But she picked up really well when Jimmy Fortune brought her to her left, into the centre of the course, which was the slowest part of the track all week. She was not beaten far in the end and she can be marked up a fair bit on this.

The daughter of Mtoto was a high class two-year-old, winning all three of the races she contested, including the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes. She did not appear to stay in the 1000 Guineas last season on her first try over a mile, but she then went on to win decisively when dropped back to six furlongs on her next start in a Group 3 contest at York. Sprinting is her game, and this was a highly respectable run in what was a really good renewal of the Golden Jubilee, half of the 24-runner field had won at Group 1 level around the world before coming into the race. The way she picked up and ran on was impressive and she probably would have been closer if she had been asked for her effort earlier or if she had been able to race closer to the pace or closer to the far rail. Nonetheless it was still a fairly decent effort and she could be underrated next time because of it.
