Maybe Grace
Maybe Grace raced freely through the early stages of the 10-furlong handicap at Fairyhouse on Wednesday evening behind no more than an ordinary pace that was set by Carefree Smile, but she travelled well into the home straight, she was still on the bridle in third place as Ask Jack challenged Carefree Smile in front of her, and she picked up nicely when Wayne Lordan went for her, taking it up a furlong out and clearing away well to post an impressive victory.
Maybe Grace is not straightforward. She usually races in cheekpieces, and she raced too freely when tried in blinkers at The Curragh at the beginning of June. She seemed to appreciate the re-fitting of the cheekpieces, but she probably appreciated the step up to 10 furlongs even more. It was her first attempt at a distance in excess of a mile, and she saw it out well, picking up nicely and galloping all the way to the line. Fast ground and 10 furlongs could be the key to her, and she should do even better off a faster pace. She was rated 75 here, 7lb lower than her all-weather mark. She will probably go up by at least that amount, but she should still be worth following now once she has her conditions and is in the mood.
