Captain Carey
Captain Carey has already been noted here this season, when he was impressive in winning a five-furlong Class 3 handicap at Chepstow back in May, and his run in the five-furlong premier handicap at The Curragh on Sunday is worthy of another mention. The Malcolm Saunders-trained gelding had no luck in-running, he came there with what looked like a strong run inside the final furlong but he couldn’t get a gap and was then hampered by Luisant checking into him inside the final 100 yards, but for which he probably would have been third, but he may have even gone on and won this had he got a gap when he needed it. After his Chepstow win, Captain Carey finished sixth in a similar race at York, but you can excuse that run, he raced from the rear off a fairly slow pace and not many horses got into the race. He returned to winning ways at Lingfield on his previous run, however, despite having to travel wide throughout. The son of Fraam is at his best in these conditions, five furlongs on easy ground, and he will be interesting when he encounters the same conditions again. He has won three out of his six races this year and he looks well capable of winning again of his current mark of 92.
