Chilworth Lad
Chilworth Lad is worth another chance after his run behind King Torus in the Group 2 Vintage Stakes at Goodwood on Wednesday. Drawn wide, Jimmy Fortune held Mick Channon’s colt in the rear of the seven-runner field, just towards the outside of runners. He wasn’t helped by some early scrimmaging between the favourite Crown Prosecutor and Surrey Star on his inside, but he had enough experience to deal with it and he travelled well into the straight, going as well as or even better than King Torus when they passed the two-furlong pole. He just failed to pick up like the winner did from there, it was his first start over seven furlongs and he faded back to finish fourth.
Chilworth Lad looked like the winner at one stage here, but he probably just failed get home in the end. He looks well worth another chance back over six furlongs now, his only previous try at that distance came when he finished fourth to Formosina in the Group 2 Railway Stakes at The Curragh, but he ran a lot better than his finishing position suggests, he was short of room and out in the centre of the track at a crucial stage, and he seemed to finish full of running, only beaten two lengths in the end. He could be very interesting if connections opt to go for the big Weatherbys Sales race at Doncaster next month.
