Mister Hughie
Mister Hughie finally delivered by winning the listed five-furlong Beverley Bullet on Saturday. Held up in behind runners by Sam Hitchcott in the early stages, Mick Channon’s colt had a lot to do at the two-furlong marker, still with a wall of horses in front of him. Hitchcott had to patiently wait for a gap to appear between Captain Dunne and Noble Storm on the far side, one which did appear at the furlong pole, and Mister Hughie showed a fine turn of foot to go through it, picking up well and keeping on doggedly to hold the late lunge of Prohibit on the near side.
This was a good performance from the son of Elusive City. Even though he only got home by a nose in the end, he would have been an unlucky loser if he had got beaten. He had run a cracker to finish fourth in the Group 2 King George Stakes at Goodwood two runs prior to this, when he missed the break, but his rider Alan Munro didn’t seem too concerned and he switched the horse to the outside where he made rapid headway to finish fourth. You can easily excuse his previous run in the Nunthorpe. He shouldn't really have been winning the Nunthorpe, but he should have run much better than he did. Actually, a lot of horses should have run better than they did at the Ebor meeting this year, some horses just didn't seem to act on the track, which may have been down to the surface which seemed to get progressively more sandy as the week went on. Mister Hughie is still only three and he is an exciting sprinter.
