Cape Tribulation
Cape Tribulation put up a very taking display on his chasing debut on Friday in winning a Hexham novice chase over three miles and one furlong. Always prominent, he jumped well in the main and although Denis O’Regan gave him a few cracks after the last, he was by no means fully extended to win by a widening four lengths from the decent, race-fit Magical Legend.
Cape Tribulation was one of the top staying novice hurdlers two seasons ago, finishing fifth when well fancied in the Albert Bartlett at the Cheltenham Festival. It is understandable that Malcom Jefferson wanted to keep him to the smaller obstacles last season as he is still only six and has the potential to go a long way over fences. Staying over timber last season, he was always going to struggle especially with a handicap mark in the 140s, but he did put up a few good efforts in small field conditions races over shorter trips. He should take high rank in staying novice chases this winter especially when the mud is flying and is with a trainer who is happy to progress patiently. He is an exciting staying novice chaser for the season ahead.
