Sea Of Heartbreak
Sea Of Heartbreak ran a cracker to finish fourth to Modeyra in a good 10-furlong listed race at Newmarket on Friday. Roger Charlton’s filly looked to be punching well above her weight coming into this race, but she was well-backed on the day and she travelled really well on the far side for Steve Drowne. She came there with her challenge at the two-furlong pole, on the outside of Middle Club, and she briefly got her head in front, but she could not match the finishing burst of Modeyra on the inside rail. She eventually tired a bit inside the final furlong and just failed to hold on for third, losing out to Middle Club in the end.
This was still a really nice performance from Sea Of Heartbreak back over 10 furlongs, which is probably her best trip. She had 16lb top find on official ratings with the second and third, and she also had to do all her running on the far side, the slowest ground on the day, emphasised by fact that the horses that finished ahead of her all raced closer to the rail and Modeyra came with her winning challenge right up against it.
A daughter of Rock Of Gibraltar, Sea Of Heartbreak is a half-sister to a listed winner and she could be well up to that class at least. She looks really progressive now, she has already won three times this season, and is rated 103 having begun the season on a mark of 70. She beat the useful Aattash, a four-time winner since, on her seasonal debut at Salisbury, and the two handicaps she won have produced a few decent winners since. She was slightly disappointing on her previous two runs, but they were both over 12 furlongs which may be just a bit too far for her. This was only her seventh ever start, it is likely that she hasn’t finished progressing and she will be interesting wherever she turns up next.
