Izzi Top

The John Gosden-trained Izzi Top caught the eye in finishing second on her racecourse debut in a one-mile fillies' maiden at Doncaster on Friday. Well back early on off what was a sedate enough early pace, in what could prove to be a top fillies' maiden (it was won last year by recent listed race winner Modeyra, with this year's Cheshire Oaks winner Gertrude Bell finishing second), she was niggled along a little when the pace increased, but she picked up really impressively among horses to get out after her stable companion Devastation, a daughter of Attraction, who had kicked for home from the front. It never looked like she was going to get to the winner, but she closed her right down all the way to the line.

This was a hugely impressive run on her racecourse debut to finish second to her much better-fancied stable companion. She was allowed go off at 33/1, she must not have been impressing too many people at home, but she is by Pivotal, out of Zee Zee Top, a top class middle-distance filly who won the Prix de l'Opera and is a half-sister to Kayf Tara and Opera House, out of Irish Oaks winner Colorspin. This is a top family and Izzi Top could prove to be a really useful middle-distance filly next year.
