American Trilogy
American Trilogy took the eye travelling well for much of the two-mile trip in the Elite Hurdle at Wincanton last Saturday. The pace was furious from the outset with four confirmed front-runners in the line-up (the usual trailblazer Barizan couldn’t even get near the front). The Sendawar gelding cruised into contention in the back straight to be on the heals of the leaders turning down the side of the course before he was slightly hampered and started to come under pressure before falling at the third last, the first in the straight. Although he probably wouldn’t have been involved at the finish, he was running a cracker on his first run for over 18 months.
American Trilogy injured himself schooling last year which ruled him out for the season, but he is reportedly set to go novice chasing now. While it is not ideal that he fell here, the fall was most likely more down to tiredness than any major jumping frailty and he will be an interesting recruit to fences, being a 148-rated hurdler and still only six.
The Paul Nicholls-trained gelding improved for the better ground in the spring of 2009, destroying the field in the County Hurdle before running really well in the Top Novices’ Hurdle at Aintree. As long as he gets over this fall, he is very much one to look out for over fences this season, although he may not be seen at his best on deep winter ground.
