Green Destiny
Green Destiny really impressed with the manner of his victory in the nine-furlong handicap that opened Newmarket’s Guineas weekend. He settled well on his seasonal return, just his fourth ever run, and was quite well back on the far side in the early stages, but he made ground easily coming down to the bushes and had to wait a bit and switch inside Viva Vettori for a run. Proponent had got first run on him but Green Destiny picked up readily when in the clear to pick him up and storm clear inside the last furlong. Proponent had been well-backed prior to this race and set a very fair standard, probably primed to run for his life in a race he had won three years ago with Frankie Dettori riding for just the second time ever (he won on him the first time). Proponent himself was clear of the rest, with the right horses filling the places.
Green Destiny didn’t make the track as a two-year-old and raced just three times at three, winning a maiden on his second start before having nearly four months off between July and the end of October, when he came back to win a heavy ground mile handicap at Leicester off 82. He had reportedly thrived through the spring, but this was a huge step up from that end-of-season heavy ground race. He made light work of a 5lb higher mark and much faster conditions though to run out a clear-cut winner, which was even more noteworthy given that his trainer William Haggas’s horses have been taking a little while to get going. He is bred to get 10 furlongs and rates a very nice prospect now.
