Main Sequence
Main Sequence had won his maiden over a mile at Yarmouth on his debut in mid-September in good style in the end, coming from quite an unpromising position a quarter of a mile from home and picking up really well when given a slap of the whip half a furlong out to ultimately win with a little to spare. It was no surprise to see him stepped up to nine furlongs for his next start, in a nursery at Newmarket last Wednesday, and he ran a similar race, coming from last to first to win a competitive race quite tidily. He stayed on really well all the way to the line over this nine-furlong trip to win going away, drawing three lengths clear of Open Water, a similar once-raced maiden winner, with Richard Hannon’s previous impressive Goodwood nursery winner Poetic Lord back in fourth.
David Lanigan’s colt had been allotted a mark of 79 for his debut win and he was short enough in the market for this on the back of that one run, especially given that he had started at 50/1 for his debut. There was money for him though, so connections presumably thought that he had the scope to improve. He did flash his tail when Ted Durcan asked him to pick up, as he had done on his debut, but that is probably down to being green and it certainly didn’t stop him running powerfully to the line.
The Aldebaran colt carries the Niarchos colours and he comes from a good Niarchos family. His dam was placed in a listed race and a Group 3 race as a juvenile, as well as finishing sixth behind Finsceal Beo in the Group 1 Prix Marcel Boussac. She is a half-sister to winners over 15 furlongs and 11 furlongs, and is out of a half-sister to the Oaks winner Light Shift, as well as to the 10-furlong Group 1 winner Shiva and the 12-furlong Group 2 winner Linmos. So Main Sequence’s pedigree suggests he should excel over middle distances next year, and he has shaped like that on his two starts to date too. He is an interesting horse for next season.
