Module

Module ran a cracker to go down by just a head to Somersby in the Haldon Gold Cup at Exeter on Tuesday. Tom George’s horse made a bad mistake at the third fence down the side of the track, he just seemed to lose his hind legs, and that really should have put paid to his chance in this company. However, he got back among them and, while he came under pressure before the home turn, he kept finding for pressure.

He was the only danger to Somersby from the second last fence, the pair of them having come clear of Cue Card and, while there was a sense that the Mick Channon horse idled in front, Module still ran all the way to the line, just failing to get back up.

This was a really encouraging run from the son of Panoramic on his seasonal debut, just his fifth ever run over fences. Winner of his first two completed races over fences last season – he fell when travelling well at Exeter on his chasing debut last season, and he beat Colour Squadron in a good beginners’ chase at Newbury on his second – he put up a big performance in the Jewson Chase at Cheltenham in March to finish fourth behind Benefficient. He finished well that day, which suggested that he could improve for a step up from that two-and-a-half-mile trip. His Haldon Gold Cup run also suggested that a return to two and a half miles would be in his favour, and he is well worth a try at three miles sooner rather than later. There is lots of stamina in his pedigree. He will be of interest wherever he runs next.
