Wilde Inspiration

Wilde Inspiration did well to win a decent one-mile handicap at Haydock on Saturday. Slowly away from stall nine, Julie Camacho's horse was quickly playing catch-up in a race that was run to suit the prominent racers. Niggled along around the home turn by Connor Beasley, he was still no better than mid-division passing the three-furlong pole and under pressure among horses. Moved towards the outside as they passed the two-furlong pole, he started to stay on well once in the clear. He came with a withering run down the outside, hit the front deep inside the final furlong and kept on strongly to win by over a length.

This was a fine performance by the Dandy Man gelding, coming from the rear in a race in which the pace held up well, with the second and third, Capo Rosso and Master The World, racing prominently. Also, he clocked a decent time for the grade, just 0.14secs/furlong slower than Racing Post par. Essentially a seven-furlong horse last season, he ran well to finish second to the useful Duelling Dragon at Leicester on his debut this season over seven furlongs. He probably improved for that run, and he seemed to improve for the step up to a mile here. He saw out every yard of the trip. Indeed, he shaped as if he needed it, and that opens up options.

The handicapper raised him to a mark of 90 for this, and that is fair. He will be of interest again now in a similar contest over a mile, and it may be that he will improve again for a step up to nine or 10 furlongs.
